Eyelid surgery and oculoplastics

The full range of eyelid surgery – from upper blepharoplasty to tumour surgery with reconstruction. We care for the health of your eyes and the aesthetics of your gaze.

The eyelids protect the eye and shape the expression of the face. With age the eyelid skin loses elasticity, excess skin and fat prolapses appear, and the levator muscle may weaken, causing the lid to droop. Some changes are purely aesthetic; others – such as ptosis, eyelid malposition or tumours – affect vision and eye health.

Dr Jarosław Rachoń covers the whole spectrum of eyelid surgery: from aesthetic procedures to reconstructive operations after tumour removal, including skin grafts.

Upper eyelid blepharoplasty

Removal of excess skin and, where needed, fat from the upper eyelids. The incision runs in the natural eyelid crease, so the healed scar is practically invisible. The procedure rejuvenates the gaze and, where excess skin restricts the visual field, improves visual comfort. It is performed under local anaesthesia; sutures are usually removed after about a week.

Lower eyelid blepharoplasty

Corrects "bags under the eyes" – fat prolapses and excess skin of the lower lids. Depending on the case we use a transconjunctival approach (no skin scar) or a subciliary incision. The procedure can be combined with upper blepharoplasty and a direct brow lift.

Ptosis repair (drooping eyelid)

Drooping of the upper eyelid may be congenital or acquired – most often it results from weakening or disinsertion of the levator aponeurosis. Surgery restores the correct lid height, improves the visual field and the symmetry of the gaze. The technique is chosen according to levator function and the cause of the ptosis.

Eyelid malposition – entropion and ectropion

An inward-turning lid (entropion) makes the lashes rub against the cornea; an outward-turning lid (ectropion) causes watering, dryness and redness. Both are corrected surgically, restoring the proper contact between the lid and the eye.

Chalazion, cysts, papillomas

Small eyelid lesions are removed as a day case under local anaesthesia. Where indicated, removed tissue is sent for histopathological examination.

Eyelid tumours and reconstruction

The most common eyelid tumour is basal cell carcinoma. Treatment consists of complete excision with histopathological control and reconstruction of the eyelid – from simple closure, through skin flaps, to skin grafts. The goal is both cure and preservation of eyelid function and appearance.

Other procedures

  • Direct brow lift
  • Surgical removal of discoloured eyelid tattoo (permanent make-up)
  • Eyelid correction in facial nerve palsy

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Does blepharoplasty leave visible scars?

For the upper lids the incision runs in the natural eyelid crease; for the lower lids just below the lash line or on the inside of the lid. Once healed, the scars are usually practically invisible.

How long is the recovery?

Swelling and bruising usually last 1–2 weeks. Sutures are removed after about a week. Most people return to office work after 7–10 days; strenuous exercise and saunas should be avoided for a few weeks.

When is eyelid surgery medical rather than cosmetic?

When excess skin or a drooping lid restricts the visual field, causes a feeling of heavy eyelids or forces you to constantly raise your brows. We assess this during qualification.

Are the procedures painful?

Procedures are performed under local anaesthesia – you feel no pain during surgery. Afterwards discomfort is usually mild and settles with over-the-counter painkillers.

How much does blepharoplasty cost?

Upper eyelid blepharoplasty costs PLN 4,000, lower PLN 8,000 and the combined procedure PLN 12,000. The qualification visit is PLN 200. The full price list is on the Prices page.
